The kamado originates from traditional Japanese clay cooking vessels. After U.S. troops brought these clay ovens back from Japan post-WWII, the redesigned commercial ceramic kamado gained huge popularity in America. In 2001, a Dutch distributor introduced the Big Green Egg to the Benelux region, marking the kamado’s official arrival in Europe. Michelin-starred chefs quickly embraced its versatile cooking performance, sparking widespread consumer interest. Soon other international kamado brands followed, alongside local European and Asian-made budget models, making ceramic kamado grills a common backyard cooking staple all across Europe.
