The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces sweeping new requirements for packaging sold in the EU market. For kamado grill importers and distributors, understanding these rules is essential to avoid supply chain disruptions and penalties.
What is PPWR?
PPWR replaces the old Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive with binding regulation that applies to all packaging placed on the EU market. It sets requirements for recyclability, waste reduction, and producer responsibility.
For large consumer goods like kamado grills, the packaging is significant both in volume and material complexity, making compliance particularly important.
Key Requirements Affecting Kamado Grill Packaging
1. Recyclability Targets
By 2030, all packaging must be 100% recyclable or reusable, with minimum recycling rates by material:
- Paper/cardboard: 85% recycling rate
- Plastic: 50% recycling rate
- Wood: 30% recycling rate
This means packaging designs that mix materials (laminated plastic on cardboard, foam inserts with plastic backing) will become non-compliant.
2. Packaging Minimization
Packaging must be limited to the minimum necessary for product protection. Excessive void fill, over-packaging, and unnecessary layers are prohibited. This requires optimized packaging design that provides adequate protection without excess material.
3. Banned & Restricted Materials
- Certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are banned in packaging
- PVC packaging is restricted
- Microplastics in packaging materials are prohibited
4. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
Producers (importers are considered producers in the EU) are financially responsible for collection, sorting, and recycling of their packaging waste. This applies to both product packaging and shipping packaging.
5. Labeling Requirements
Packaging must be clearly marked with material type, recycling instructions, and producer identification. Barcode or QR code systems for digital product passports will be phased in.
Compliance Timeline
- 2027: Most core requirements take effect
- 2030: Full recyclability targets
- 2032: Additional reduction targets
However, supply chain adaptation takes time, so manufacturers and importers should begin optimizing packaging now.
